We’re almost six months into 2022, and while there’s no shortage of crazy happenings this year, we still have much to celebrate. Even when reality isn’t up to par, we still have an abundance of Black-led films to look forward to. When Black storytellers, whether actors or filmmakers, come together to tell our stories, there’s no greater feeling.

The wonderful thing about these films is that in addition to telling our stories, they also provide an escape from reality that we all need at times. From fiction to real life, Black storytellers have always done their due diligence in ensuring our stories are told accurately and 2022 is no different. Check out our list of seven Black-led films coming out this year.

1. "Woman King"

Viola Davis is one of the most legendary actresses to grace the earth, and we know she’s going to absolutely slay this role. Davis plays an amazon named Nanisca in this film, inspired by the opulent Kingdom of Dahomey, which was located in what is now West Africa. It’s set to be released on Sept. 16.

2. "They Cloned Tyrone"

Science fiction and comedy? We’ll take it. This film, starring Jamie Foxx, tells the story of a trio on the hunt to uncover a federal conspiracy. Foxx’s trio consists of him and characters played by John Boyega and Teyonah Parris. Details are forthcoming.

Anything that has Queen Latifah starring in it is sure to be a hit. The New Jersey native plays a widowed mother by the name of Brenda, who must fiercely protect her family as they ward off a homicidal killer in the desert while en route to start a new life.

4. "Neptune Frost"

Black joy but make it futuristic. That’s the plot of this upcoming film, in which two characters by the names of Matalusa and Neptune find love in cyberspace. Set in Rwanda and releasing June 3, this film is being helmed as a cyber musical.

Mahershala Ali will be starring in this latest rendition of the iconic Marvel comic book. While details are scarce, we do know that it’s sure to be full of action and suspense. It was recently announced that Lion King alum Aaron Pierre would be involved in an unknown capacity.

6. "I'm Charlie Walker"

Mike Colter plays Charlie Walker, a man who embarks on a mission to save the San Francisco coast from an environmental disaster. Set in 1971 and based on a true story, the film hones in on how he encountered racism along the way.

Who knew that saving the world could look so handsome? That’s definitely the case for Dwayne Johnson, who plays the titular character. Though not much information is known about the film, we can surely count on Johnson to deliver a fabulous performance with even more fabulous stunts.
