J. Cole surprised fans and general hip-hop lovers alike when he dropped his "Album of the Year" freestyle. The Fayetteville rapper spits his lyrics over the beat of Nas and Bravehearts' 2001 track "Oochie Wally," his first release since his KOD album dropped in April.

Jermaine gave us fair warning that he was coming with some new heat when he tweeted on Monday, August 6, that he was hungry to murder a few beats, but we weren't expecting him to come like this.

The freestyle is accompanied by a Simon David-directed visual. According to Hot Hip Hop News,  the project comes with news of a new mixtape titled The Off Season.

When J. Cole fans got ahold of the new music, they were more than eager to let the rest of Twitter know that their fave is their fave for a reason.

J. Cole fan or not, this lyricism is a breath of fresh air. Are you feeling the freestyle?
