Jamie Foxx revealed the film he directed in which he stars as a racist white cop and Robert Downey Jr. as a Mexican man will likely never see the light of day anytime soon.
Foxx shot a comedy titled All-Star Weekend in 2016. The film would have seen Foxx star alongside a cast that included Jeremy Piven, Benicio del Toro, Gerard Butler, Eva Longoria and Robert Downey Jr.
The film’s storyline revolves around a duo of best friends who take a road trip to Los Angeles to attend the All-Star Basketball Game, but their journey is upended by a handful of wacky characters.
During an interview with CinemaBlend, Foxx revealed that the film remains unreleased due to the current state of comedy, a genre that remains under scrutiny.
“It’s been tough with the lay of the land when it comes to comedy,” Foxx said to CinemaBlend. “We’re trying to break open the sensitive corners where people go back to laughing again… We hope to keep them laughing and run them right into ‘All-Star Weekend’ because we were definitely going for it.”
Among the plethora of wacky characters that would've inhabited 'All-Star Weekend' include a racist white cop that would have been played by Foxx.
In addition, the film would have seen Downey Jr. star as a Mexican guy, a casting choice that would’ve most likely incited controversy.
In a prior interview with Joe Rogan in 2017, Foxx defended the casting of Robert Downey Jr. in the role of a Mexican man, referencing the actor’s prior role in Tropic Thunder, in which he donned blackface.
"I called Robert, I said, ‘I need you to play a Mexican.’ I said, ‘S**t, you played the Black dude [in ‘Tropic Thunder’] and you killed that shit.’ We got to be able to do characters,” Foxx said.
While fans of Foxx may never get to see All-Star Weekend, they can currently see the actor and singer in the vampire comedy Day Shift, which is currently streaming on Netflix.
