Janelle Monae will premiere a short film for “Dirty Computer” a day prior to her album release.

It's been five years since Monae released an album, although we have gotten our fix as she's dominated the big screen in Oscar-nominated and winning films such as "Hidden Figures" and "Moonlight."  Now, the singer/actress is starring in her own film, "Dirty Computer: An Emotion Picture," which is scheduled to broadcast on BET and MTV on April 26.

According to Shadow and Act, the film stars Monae and Tessa Thompson, as Monae's lover according to Vulture as it follows a young woman named Jane 57821 (Monae) who is living in a totalitarian near-future society where citizens are referred to as “computers.” The narrative is meant to explore humanity andlife, liberty and the pursuit of happiness when mind and machines merge.

In a Billboard interview, Monae explained, "'Dirty Computer' is a near-future story about a citizen who finds love and danger in a totalitarian society. She’s an outlaw because she’s being herself. Overall, I wanted to reflect what’s happening in the streets right now, and what might happen tomorrow if we don't band together and fight for love.”

The announcement comes after fans went crazy over Monae and Thompson in the "PYNK" music video earlier this month. "PYNK" unabashedly explores and celebrates all things women.

Monae's choice to feature an entire film with the release of her album adds a rare, but much appreciated, element to the mix. For a while, it seemed that visuals were becoming less and less important with new music. However, artists like Monae seem to be challenging that notion. The 44-minute film will feature both music videos and a developed storyline.

“I’ve been inspired by the people that came before me, the artists who pushed the limits of where music can go and how it can be represented visually,” Monae said.
