White House Chief of Staff John Kelly made waves last week when he attempted to discredit Rep. Frederica Wilson's account that President Trump made insensitive comments to Myeshia Johnson, the widow of Sgt. La David Johnson. Now, the retired United States Marine Corps general is at it again – this time, revising history and adding his two cents to the Confederate statue debate.
During an interview on a Fox News show Monday night, Kelly argued that "history is history" and suggested that the Civil War was caused "by a lack of an ability to compromise."
"The lack of an ability to compromise led to the Civil War, and men and women of good faith on both sides made their stand where their conscience had them make their stand," Kelly said. This "both sides" argument is reminiscent of comments that Trump made after the white supremacists' rally that took place in Charlottesville, Va., in August.
This false romanticism of history implies that those who fought for the ownership, forced labor and brutal enslavement of humans were simply people of "good faith." These statements are problematic and dangerous attempts to rationalize hate. No moral equivalency can be drawn between slavers and abolitionists or white supremacists and anti-white supremacist protesters. None.
Kelly didn't stop there. He went on to praise the Confederate general whose statue removal was the impetus for the Charlottesville white supremacist rally. "Robert E. Lee was an honorable man, he was a man that gave up his country to fight for his state, which 150 years ago was more important than country,” he said.
I can't even…Just, when can we get them out of there? We've had more than enough.
