British race car driver Lewis Hamilton took to Instagram to share that he’s had a “tough year” and he’s been struggling with his mental health, the New York Post reports.

“It has been such a tough year already with everything that is happening around us,” he wrote in an Instagram story. “Hard some days to stay positive. I have struggled mentally and emotionally for a long time, to keep going is a [constant] effort but we have to keep fighting, we have so much to do and to achieve.”

The Formula One racer continued, saying, “I’m writing to tell you it’s ok to feel the way you do, just know that you are not alone and that we are gonna get through this! A friend reminded me today, you are so powerful & you can do anything you put your mind to! We can do anything we put our mind to. Let’s remember to live in gratitude for another day to rise. Sending you love and light.”

The message comes after Hamilton confirmed his foundation Mission 44’s partnership with Sky UK. Together, they’re planning on tackling the issue of racial exclusion that Black children face in the U.K.

“Together, we’re making meaningful, real world change in the lives of young people who for too long have been left out, left behind, and forgotten,” Hamilton wrote in a previous Instagram story.

Hamilton launched Mission 44 in 2021. The foundation aims to “support, champion and empower young people from underrepresented groups, in the UK to succeed.”
