In celebration of the strength, determination, and beauty of black women who go the distance, My Black Is Beautiful celebrates world champion bobsledding athlete, Kehri Jones.
Young, independent and self-made, Jones has always been ahead of the curve. At 16-years-old, she had already earned her high school diploma and gained acceptance to Baylor University where she became a top-ranking college athlete. “I was one of the fastest kids in Texas,” she said in an interview with TeamUSA.
Unbeknownst to Jones, her exemplary track record had already garnered the attention of two-time Olympic medalist Elana Meyers Taylor who sent an email to Chris Ruf, Jones’ track and field coach, to inquire about Jones’ viability for the U.S. Olympic bobsled team. With a glowing recommendation from her coach, the graduating senior set out on a new adventure.
Since that fateful day, the 23-year-old Texan has gone on to become a world champion. “Some girls are faster, but I’m able to apply what I have in the sled more than someone,” Jones said when asked about her dexterity. At such a young age, Jones defeated the odds and has broken barriers, proving that #BlackGirlsDo, no matter their age or doubts from others.
"We have posters come out for our race every week, you look to see who's going to be on the poster…a lot of the time we don't have a chance to be on the poster because we don't have the look of what people perceive bobsled to be,” Jones said. “I know that if we keep fighting and keep doing well they'll have no choice but to put us on those posters."
We salute Kehri Jones for pushing the boundaries and showing us exactly what #BlackGirlsDo
