A 27-year-old man has been arrested at North Carolina A&T State University on multiple charges after he wreaked havoc on the campus.

WXII 12 News reported police arrived at A&T State’s campus on March 26 after learning a heavily armed man — Brandon James Bentley — was on the premises. Authorities claimed when they tried to interact with Bentley, he quickly became violent and threatened them. A&T campus officers told police the 27-year-old chased unarmed security guards, who later helped police detain Bentley.

Authorities also confirmed they found two handguns, two shotguns, one rifle, a crossbow, a machete, a stun gun, hatchets, knives, choking devices, pepper spray, a blow dart gun, brass knuckles and other weaponry in his vehicle. They also found more than 1,000 rounds of various ammunition.

He appeared in court on March 27.

Bentley has been charged with various weapons offenses, including firearm on educational property, explosive device on educational property, weapon on educational property, carrying a concealed weapon, driving with a revoked license and reckless driving.

According to News One, if Bentley is released, he must avoid A&T and other educational institutions.

North Carolina A&T State University issued a statement addressing the incident, explaining that Bentley has no connection to the school and has been banned from campus.

“The FBI, State Bureau of Investigation, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and Greensboro Police Department are in charge of an ongoing joint investigation into this incident. Bentley, who has no affiliation with A&T, has been banned from the North Carolina A&T campus,” the statement read in part.

The school added it is “committed to safety and security of our campus and will continue to use the emergency alert system in instances where threats are ongoing.”

While it’s unclear whether Bentley is out on bond, a Facebook account with the 27-year-old’s name and a picture of an individual who looks like Bentley shared a screenshot of messages referencing the incident. In one of the messages, Bentley wrote, “the reason I’ve got charged,” suggesting he’s out.

According to the messages, Bentley blamed his arrest on a “guy who’s been playing mind games on me.”
