Though infamous for his collaborative or otherwise secreted contributions to society through partnerships with the NBA and other philanthropic acts of servitude, basketball legend Michael Jordan has taken a more public, and verbal stance on issues of need and social justice, during this present time. In fact, the beloved former pro athlete has publicly announced that he will directly be donating $7 million to establish healthcare clinics in Charlotte’s at-risk communities.
Jordan, a native of North Carolina, had often been criticized for his lack of public opinion on many civil and social issues. However, based on occurrences in recent years, it appears MJ has taken heed to the charge and has opted to appeal our more, addressing controversial topics such as the NC Bathroom Bill, the GSW White House “uninvite” From President Trump, and the NFL protests. Jordan adds:
“One of the fundamental rights this country is founded on was freedom of speech, and we have a long tradition of nonviolent, peaceful protest. Those who exercise the right to peacefully express themselves should not be demonized or ostracized… At a time of increasing divisiveness and hate in this country, we should be looking for ways to work together and support each other and not create more division. I support Commissioner Adam Silver, the NBA, its players and all those who wish to exercise their right to free speech.”
The clinics are projected to open in 2020 and are designed to serve some of the city’s densest areas of poverty. Jordan hopes the clinics “will help provide a brighter and healthier future for the children and families they serve.”
