An Army veteran from Winnfield, Louisiana, was hospitalized for injuries to her face and eyes following a brutal encounter with police.

The victim, Tanisha White, was reportedly at a friend's house when she called the police for a ride home, something she has done many times, per news outlet KNOE.

"The police officer pulled the taser out and started shooting in my right eye," White recalled.

She said her attack must have been the result of a misunderstanding. Reports state she may have fallen during the police encounter, but that has yet to be confirmed, and the officer responsible hasn't yet been identified, according to NBC 10.

For about three days, the victim remained in a Shreveport hospital. She awoke to bruises around her eyes, broken bones and news she would never again see out of her right eye.

"It's already hard living day to day, I have to stay with my parents you know, so this is just going to make my life even harder," White told NBC 10.

Upon seeing her, White's sister, Tramika Coleman, compared the bruises and scars to those of Emmett Till.

"When I saw her, the first thing that came to mind was Emmett Till because that’s how bad it was," she said.

Louisiana state police are launching an investigation into the incident, and the American Civil Liberties Union of Louisiana has demanded answers by issuing an open records request.

In a statement, Alanah Odoms Hebert, executive director of the ACLU of Louisiana, said, “Tanisha White’s grievous injuries demand an immediate and thorough investigation and accountability for the officer involved. Excessive use of force by police, especially against people of color, is a systemic problem that destroys trust, hinders public safety and devastates Black and brown communities. While marketed as an alternative to the use of deadly force, Tasers can cause serious injury and even death – and should never be used punitively or for the purpose of coercion. Tanisha White and the Winnfield community deserve answers, and a police department that protects the people it serves.”
