A 10 part update of the 1986 Spike Lee film She's Gotta Have It is set to release in November. Dewanda Dise of Shots Fired will play the protagonist of the series, Nola Darling. Hamilton star Anthony Ramos will play Mars Blackmon.
The full description via Screen Crush is as follows:
"She’s Gotta Have It the Netflix Original Series from Academy Award Nominated Director SPIKE LEE is a 10-episode contemporary update of Lee’s 1986 revolutionary debut film. Starring DeWanda Wise (Shots Fired) in the central role of Nola Darling, a Brooklyn-based artist in her late twenties struggling to define herself and divide her time amongst her Friends, her Job and her Three Lovers: Greer Childs played by Cleo Anthony (Divergent), Jamie Overstreet played by Lyriq Bent (The Book of Negroes), and Mars Blackmon played by Hamilton alum Anthony Ramos. Chyna Layne (Precious) and Ilfenesh Hadeara (Baywatch), Margot Bingham (Barbershop: The Next Cut), Sydney Morton (Love, New York), and Joie Lee (Do The Right Thing) also star. Lee directs all 10 episodes of the series, he created and produced the show."
While the series will undoubtedly attract Spike Lee fans as well as new show connoisseurs familiar with his work, people do have to wonder if he can get it right this time. The series will be co-produced by Lee’s wife, Tonya Lewis Lee, as well as according to IMDB, a good percentage of the listed writers are women.
Judging by the trailer, we're not sure what to think, but fingers crossed it's good because any time there's an opportunity for black actors to shine, I'm here for it.
