The South is more or less united when it comes to believing racism is the country's top issue.
However, the unity stops there: a new poll shows that Southerners are split when it comes to Donald Trump, Confederate monuments and the economy according to the Post And Courier.
Winthrop University recently conducted a poll surveying residents of 11 Southern states over the course of 2 months. The states involved were: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia.
The survey found that only five percent of Southerners of all races believe that Confederate monuments need to go; however, 20 percent of black Southerners surveyed wanted the monuments completely gone. Almost half of African Americans surveyed believe that the monuments should be transferred to museums.
When it comes to President Trump, Southerners were split by race. White Southerners said that Trump is the U.S.' sixth biggest problem; black Southerners said that the president is the country's second biggest problem.
Similarly, two-thirds of African Americans surveyed believed the economy is getting worse while that same number of white respondents believed it is getting better.
Black respondents said that racism is the country's biggest problem; whites surveyed said that racism is the country's fifth biggest problem, and that the government is the nation's number one problem.
The survey also tried to get to the bottom of Southerners' attitudes about the legacy of slavery.
65 percent of black respondents said that the legacy of slavery and discrimination holds black Americans back economically; 61 percent of white respondents said that everyone has an equal shot at success regardless of race.
All Southerners believed political correctness was a threat to society.
African Americans were more favorable toward Black Lives Matter and Antifa movements than their white counterparts, but both groups actually rated neo-Nazis and white supremacist groups in a negative fashion.
