First, a recap… a product of The New Caribbean Cinema Series – described as a fresh, pioneering approach to film-making in the Caribbean, intent on presenting the world with a showcase of talent from the region’s up and coming filmmakers.
The series is a Caribbean co-production, jointly produced by Storm Saulter from Jamaica, and the St Lucian born Michelle Serieux. The productions rely heavily on the creative and technical support of Joel Burke and Nile Saulter and are sustained by the commitment and effort of their production crew. Tired of waiting on funding that never comes, New Caribbean Cinema exists to challenge old models and to prove that in the region, innovation and ingenuity are key to artistic expression.
One of the films to come out of that series is Ring di Alarm!, which comprises of a compilation of eight short films by different directors about life in modern-day Jamaica, made by the New Caribbean Cinema filmmakers’ collective. The filmmakers include Desmond Young, Joel Burke, Kyle Chin, Michael "Ras Tingle" Tingling, Michelle Serieux, Nile Saulter, and Storm Saulter.
Moving from the majestic Blue Mountains, to the gritty ghetto, to the stunning north coast, and spinning stories funny, suspenseful, thrilling and poignant, this is a cinematic mosaic as diverse and complex as the island that inspired it.
You'll recognize some of the faces in the film, including Roger Guenveur Smith.
It made its USA premiere at the 3rd Annual Flatbush Film Festival: West Indian Edition (presented by caribBEING), last December; and it'll next screen at the PAFF in LA next month.
PAFF 2013 will take place at the new Rave Cinemas Baldwin Hills 15 at the Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza in Los Angeles, and will kick off festivities with a star-studded Opening Night Gala on Thursday, February 7, 2013 at the Rave Cinemas Baldwin Hills 15 theatre.
