The friends of former Star Trek actress Nichelle Nichols are speaking out after her son sold her home, People reports.
Kyle Johnson, Nichols’ only child, was appointed conservator of her estate in Jan. 2019. She currently resides in New Mexico and suffers from dementia.
Last week, The Los Angeles Times reported that the home sold for nearly $2.2 million to Baron Construction & Remodeling Co.
Angelique Fawcette, and Nichols’ former manager Gilbert Bell, say they are heartbroken by the latest developments in the public battle over Nichols’ conservatorship.
"She's been like a mother to me," Fawcette recalled. "It's been horrendous. It's been painful to watch her go through this experience."
"When the house was sold, I was very hurt for her," she continued. "She has no place to go back to anymore. It hurt me because I knew that it would hurt her. She stated that she wanted to remain in her home, yet the court let her son move her out."
Bell spoke about the pride that Nichols had in her home and said that she would be devastated if she was fully aware.
"She was proud of [that house]. She designed it. She helped build it. She planted the trees on it. It was a dream come true for her," Bell said. "No matter where we were, when she came back from a convention and she would come into her home, she would sing to the house and say, 'Hello, home. Hello, house. I'm home.”
Bell also said that Johnson always intended to sell his mother’s home.
"[He said] she had no business being there, that he wanted her in a one-bedroom condo. He wanted to get the property sold," he explained. "He's in charge.
As Blavity previously reported, in 2018, Johnson filed for a conservatorship and won. Fawcette accused Johnson of filing the conservatorship so that he could have access to the actress’ finances.
Bell, who has been staying in the guest house of Nichols’ home, recently filed a lawsuit against Johnson, accusing him of trying to have him removed from the property.
In response, Johnson filed a countersuit claiming that as Nichols’ condition worsened, Bell committed elder abuse by trying to take advantage of the actress and her financial assets.
Fawcette said that she plans to keep on advocating for Nichols despite the opposition from Johnson.
"When you have a relationship with someone, that relationship is always going to remain in your heart and soul,” she added. “Unfortunately, her son has tried to destroy our relationship. The relationship will always be here and I will always keep my promise to fight for Nichelle."
