On Sunday, football legend O.J. Simpson became a free man after being incarcerated for armed robbery for the past nine years. The Associated Press reports that Simpson was released from Lovelock Correctional Center in northern Nevada. Simpson's freedom comes with the restriction of up to five years of parole supervision, which can be reduced with credits of good behavior.

In the photos above, Simpson can be seen signing documents before his release. State Prisons Spokeswoman Brooke Keast told the AP that she wasn't immediately aware of where Simpson was headed in his first hours of freedom, but she confirmed that he was met by an unidentified driver and taken to an undisclosed location.

Keast's department released a short video of the release on social media. Keast explained that Simpson was released from prison in the middle of the night to avoid media attention.

“We needed to do this to ensure public safety and to avoid any possible incident,” Keast told AP.

Via text message, Simpson's friend Tom Scotto – who lives in Naples, Florida – said he was with Simpson at the time of his release, reports the AP. However, Scotto didn't respond when asked where they were going or if Simpson's sister Shirley Baker or his daughter Arnelle Simpson were with him. Scotto and Simpson's daughter and sister attended his parole hearing back in July.

Simpson has expressed interest in going to Florida, where he lived prior to the armed robbery conviction in Las Vegas in 2007. However, Florida prison officials say documents haven't been filed, and Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi said she doesn't want Simpson living in the state.

“The specter of his residing in comfort in Florida should not be an option,” Bondi said in a statement on Friday. “Our state should not become a country club for this convicted criminal.”

Although the 70-year-old lost his home near Miami to foreclosure in 2012, Simpson still has two children, Justin and Sydney, who live in Florida.
