The moment Ibtihaj Muhammad stepped onto the Olympic scene with her hijab, she was a force to be reckoned with.

Muhammad made history by becoming the first Muslim American woman to wear a hijab while competing for Team USA. She won a bronze medal in sabre fencing, thus also becoming the first female Muslim American athlete to win a medal at the Olympics!

Essentially, Muhammad became an instant role model, especially for little girls of color.

Now, after being put into the history books, Muhammad will be immortalized in a very different way. She's about to become one of the most iconic figures in the toy industry: a Barbie!

As part of Mattel's "Shero" line, which honors heroes like Ava DuVernay, Muhammad will get her very own doll.

“I can’t believe this is happening honestly,” Muhammad told the Huffington Post. “It’s a pinch me moment.”

“Barbie is celebrating Ibtihaj not only for her accolades as an Olympian, but for embracing what makes her stand out,” said Barbie's Vice President of Global Marketing, Sejal Shah Miller. “Ibtihaj is an inspiration to countless girls who never saw themselves represented, and by honoring her story, we hope this doll reminds them that they can be and do anything.

Mohammad knows how significant this is, because like many children of color who grew up before Barbie was as diversified as it is today, it was difficult to find an array of brown and black dolls.

“My mom made efforts when I was a kid to bring dolls into the house that were only dolls of color,” she said. “So I only had brown Barbie dolls growing up, and I think that was an effort made by my parents to see us reflected in the dolls we played with. It’s revolutionary to make all kids ― no matter your skin color, your gender, your ethnicity, your religious beliefs ― feel included.”

Now, she gets to represent that very thing for another child.

“It’s a very humbling experience to even be in the same sentence with these women,” she said of the Shero line, which has featured Misty Copeland and Gabby Douglas in addition to DuVernay. “I feel very proud and good about working with a brand that honors not just powerful women and women of color, but also a brand that honors women who are working to impact the global community, not just today but also in the future.”

Congrats to Ibtihaj Muhammad! Much deserved!
