I was initially planning to post this on Thursday/Friday, ahead of the opening of After Earth, but my list was lacking, so I thought I’d use part of my weekend to see if I could come up with any others to add to it. 

Unfortunately, I couldn’t think of any other father/son acting pairs (other than the few I list below). So I’m handing the mic (so to speak) to you folks, hoping that you can assist.

Here’s what I have thus far. 

In short, given that After Earth stars a real-life black father/son pairing, I thought I’d take a look at other black father/son on-screen pairings – other fathers and sons who’ve appeared in films and/or TV shows, together. 

– Of course, Will Smith and Jaden Smith have done 2 movies together – The Pursuit Of Happyness and now, After Earth, playing father and son in both (although that doesn’t have to be the case for others. Meaning, while they are father and son in real life, they don’t have to have played father and son on screen). 

– Mario Van Peebles and Melvin Van Peebles have appeared on screen together quite a few times: Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song, Sonny Spoon, Identity Crisis, Posse, and Panther to name most of them; although I believe that’s all of them. They’ve even directed each other, as well as collaborated on scripts. I wonder if there’s one more father/son project in store for these two.

– Damon Wayans has appeared on screen with both of his sons: Damon Wayans Jr. (My Wife and Kids, Blankman), and Michael Wayans (My Wife and Kids, Blankman).

That’s all I’ve got!

I thought maybe Greg Morris and son Phil Morris had appeared in something together, but couldn’t confirm that. Also James Earl Jones’ father, Robert Earl Jones, was an actor as well. However, it doesn’t appear that they acted in any films or TV shows together.

Sammy Davis Jr. is said to have performed with his father, Sammy Davis Sr., but not on screen. His father was one-third of the Will Mastin Trio, a vaudeville dance troupe, performing from the 1920s through the 1960s. 

Can you think of any other black father/son on-screen pairings to add to this list? And not just African American, by the way. The entire Diaspora.
