DMX and his goddaughter, actress Paige Hurd, were once kicked out of Six Flags after the late rapper was caught having weed. Speaking with Preme magazine, the 30-year-old Power Book II: Ghost star recalled exactly what led up to the bizarre moment.
DMX and Hurd met while filming 2003’s Cradle 2 the Grave, Pop Culture reported. Not long before they started filming the action-thriller movie, Hurd said they made a trip to Six Flags, hoping to build their on-screen daddy-daughter chemistry at the popular amusement park. The trip, however, turned out to be a different type of roller coaster.
“[So] he came to pick me [and my sister] up from my house… And he was taking us to Six Flags,” Hurd said. “Now, I’m claustrophobic. I do not do roller coasters; I don’t do theme parks. I was like, ‘Yeah, well, I don’t ride roller coasters.'”
But it was apparently too late to back out. “He was like, ‘Well, you are today,'” she continued. “I was freaking out the entire way there. He drives very fast. I’m pretty sure we could all imagine. Very, very fast in this small car, and we’re driving down the 5 freeway [and he] misses the exit.”
Instead of taking the next exit, Hurd said her godfather had an unconventional shortcut in mind. “Middle of the freeway, reverses and reverses down the on-ramp to get up,” she explained. “We get to Six Flags and me, and my sister are terrified we have to get on these rides. And by the grace of God, weed was not legal then. They found weed, and we got kicked out before we even got in. And I am like, ‘I’m the Lord’s child. He loves him some Paige.’ Then we ended up going to the mall, KFC and hanging out for the day. That’s one of my first memories that we’ve had.”
Following DMX’s death in 2021, Hurd posted a heartfelt tribute to the late rapper via an Instagram post. “I just can’t believe this was our goodbye Shock has been my feeling the past month since I got the worst call in the middle of the night,” part of her caption read. “The shock & grief is heavy, uncomfortable, and hard to express. I just don’t have much yet, forgive my silence. I’m trying but right now I don’t have the best words.”
As a teen, Hurd made a name for herself as an actress, thanks to her early recurring role as Tasha in Everybody Hates Chris, and she has commanded the screen as Lauren in Power Book II: Ghost since 2020. She also has plans of showing off her musical side in the near future, as she is set to release a rap album, Hurd U, featuring collaborations with Meek Mill and 21 Savage, to name a few.
