Pediatrician Dr. Nadine Burke Harris will serve as the first surgeon general in California’s history.

Incoming Governor Gavin Newsom appointed Harris, reports NBC. Like Newsom, Harris is a Democrat. She is the founder of the Center for Youth Wellness, an organization in San Francisco dedicated to ensuring the health of the state’s children, especially ones who suffer from toxic stress and trauma.

Harris has also served as an adviser of the Let’s Get Healthy California Task Force and member of the Boys and Men of Color Trauma Advisory Committee, according to Lake County News.

She will continue her work with the state’s youngest citizens and their families in her new position.

This will be her second time working under Newsom. The now-governor appointed Harris to the San Francisco Citizens' Committee for Community Development when he was the city’s mayor.

Harris will be paid $200,000 a year. She will be sworn in on February 11 and expressed her gratitude on Twitter.

“Looking forward to rolling up my sleeves as CA's first surgeon general,” she wrote. “Thank you @GavinNewsom for your bold vision for health for all Californians.  #preventscreenandheal!”
