house of lies

Connor Sanders is the face of the group but is also looking to go solo and leave his other group members in the dust. His financials are in shambles though, and Marty uses that as a hook to keep him in the group. His groupmates want equal pay, and Connor’s best friend Sam just wants to make music again.

Jeannie is dating Seth, and things seem to be going well. She quickly realizes that he’s just using her for his campaign after he sees him at a campaign event pitching her as a ‘single mother.’ Clyde tries to help, but it backfires.

Jeannie has a romantic moment with D’REAM OUT LOUD member Sam, who tells her how much Seth doesn’t deserve her. Apparently, something about his approach worked.

Seth is curious to find out why Jeannie is dodging his calls, and she crushes their short-lived relationship.

Doug is riding the high off his public lecture, but Tess is still furious about being ignored. She confronts him and tells him things are over. Doug realizes that losing her business would hurt the firm, but in order to keep it, Tess requires Doug to make her Dungeon Master of their guild. She’s not playing any games.

At the deal meeting, the pod’s plan comes full circle. They set up Connor to go on a solo tour, and the group then does a final reunion tour a year after and make a ton of money. Everyone is in agreement except for Sam, who feels betrayed by Jeannie. It’s dirty on all sides, but another solid win on Marty’s quest for a big payday.

Marty finds out Skip has a verbal commitment from the Kohl brothers to buy Monica’s firm. This leaves him with only one option — a monster play. He wants to bring the Kohl brothers to Cuba and help them take over everything in sight.

Lines that made us lose our chill:

“Tess understands that I’m a lot of women’s hall pass now” – Doug

“Tell me again why we’re chasing the paler version of New Kids on the Block” – Jeannie

“We will drink to the last two weeks of your financial security”  – Marty

A real moment

The industry is (still) shady

Artists fighting with their labels is a familiar narrative, and unfortunately, one that has played out several times already in 2016. We’ve seen it manifested through major artists bucking the system and using digital platforms to go directly to consumers, or even just releasing their music for free and dealing with the legal ramifications. Many of us want that old thing back — the reason we fell in love with our favorite artists. Whatever the issues are that keep artists from doing what they love, there is always a universal loser —the fans and loyal supporters who just want that old thing back.
