A Black woman in South Africa was found hanging from a tree near Johannesburg on Monday.
According to The Daily Mail, 28-year-old Tshegofatso Pule was reported missing Thursday after a dispute with her boyfriend at his apartment. After she never returned home and calls to her phone went unanswered, family members launched a search. Four days later, her remains were found by an individual walking nearby. Pule was last seen entering an Uber car after leaving her boyfriend's home.
The victim was eight months pregnant at the time, and as investigations into her death continue, the hashtag #JusticeForTshego has remained a trending topic on Twitter in South Africa.
I can't even begin to understand- how many more women, girls, children must live w/ the fear of violations & attacks. To say I'm furious is putting it mildly. Rest In Power #JusticeForTshego #TshegofatsoPule #sayhername pic.twitter.com/WaonfVIRHb— JL Warner (@gr8gbgrl) June 9, 2020
Regarding whether arrests were close to being made, Eyewitness News received this statement from South African authorities: "Police are investigating a case of murder of a pregnant 28-year-old woman who was found hanged in Durban Deep in an open veld."
Maite Nkoana-Mashabane, South Africa's minister for women, mourned Pule and denounced violence based on gender in remarks following her passing.
"We should never allow gender-based violence to become a norm in our communities," Nkoana-Mashabane said.
"How many more women, young girls and children must live with this constant fear of being attacked and violated? Women should not have to protect themselves from men. They have the right to feel safe."
Per the BBC, 2,930 South African adult women were killed over the course of one year, from 2017-2018. That averages roughly to one murder every three hours.
