It traveled on a screening series “Heritage Tour” last year, starting with a premiere held at the Woodruff Arts Center in Atlanta, GA, in January, which was reportedly attended by the likes of Tyler Perry, and Soledad O’Brien.

The film, titled Kunta Kinteh Island: Coming Home Without Shackles, is directed by Elvin Ross, making his debut as writer and director.

Made to honor and celebrate Kunta Kinteh, a character from the novel Roots: The Saga of an American Family by Alex Haley, which would also be adapted for the small screen, the Kunta Kinteh Island: Coming Home Without Shackles story reads:

The island, on the Gambia River, was an important site in the West African slave trade, and is now listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The island itself has been gradually eroding, and is said to be a small fraction of the site it was during the time when the fort was active.

Descendants of Kunta Kinteh still live in Gambia, and are featured in the documentary, which screened at the Pan African Film Festival in Los Angeles last year, and continues to screen around the country.

According to its Facebook page, screenings took place in the following cities: Nashville, Washington, Philadelphia, New York, Boston, Houston, Dallas, Detroit, Chicago, Los Angeles and New Orleans. But no updates on where it’ll screen next, or how you can purchase a copy if you wanted to.
