It may or may not be a surprise to you to know that, since the 1980’s, Hip Hop has thrived in Cameroon, the West African country, with underground beginners and experienced artists, developing a movement with the music, incorporating local customs, culture and tradition.

From director Tommy Fabas comes what is being dubbed the first documentary to focus on Cameroonian hip-hop, titled Urban Griots.

All over the country, artists have claimed a musical scene all their own, labeled “Mboa style, the style that belongs to us” – the dogma for these fledgling, new urban griots of Cameroon.

I discovered the film earlier today, but little is available online about it at the moment; its Facebook page hasn’t been updated in a year, with not a lot of information on it – except, thankfully, the trailer that follows below.

It looks like it screened in Cameroon, in November of 2012. But nowhere else since then. I’ll look for it on the film festival circuit in 2014. I’ve also sent a message to whomever runs the film’s Facebook page for any updates on the film’s whereabouts.
