Amid the white nationalist rally that escalated in Charlottesville and the controversial removal of Confederate statues across the country, the debate around Confederate monuments has escalated to Capitol Hill with House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) pushing to remove Confederate statues from Congress. On Monday night, former Trump campaign spokeswoman Katrina Pierson and Johns Hopkins University professor Wendy Osefo faced off in a debate around the topic as guest commentators on Fox News.

When presented by host Ainsley Earhardtwith with the question of whether or not House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) should join Pelosi in her campaign for the removal of Confederate monuments in the halls of Congress, predictably the two guests found themselves on polar sides of the debate. Pierson contended that the monuments reflect history. A history that, whether bad or good, is treasured by many Americans and provides an opportunity for the country to learn. Osefo countered that the statues, erected after the South lost the Civil War in an act of treason, did not serve a noble purpose. “It’s actually nefarious," Osefo said. "So it doesn’t deserve a place on state grounds. It deserves a place in museums. And that’s where they need to be.” Pierson responded, “It absolutely deserves a place because bad history is still good history for this country." In response to that assertion, Osefo asked Pierson, “Slavery is good history?” Pierson offered a response of “absolutely,” which set off a tense argument between the two guests.
