Protesters dressed as the characters in The Handmaid’s Tale outside of Justice Amy Coney Barrett’s house on Wednesday, according to Newsweek. Their demonstration comes after Barrett’s name came up in a draft opinion suggesting Roe v. Wade would be overturned.
A video of the protest shows seven people dressed in red robes and white bonnets silently walking outside of Barrett’s home in Falls Church, Virginia, TMZ reports. They held up signs with several slogans, including “keep your rosaries off my ovaries” and “we did not elect people of praise.” According to TMZ, people also shouted, “We’re not protesting, this is performance art.”
The demonstration at Barrett’s home was one of several that occurred after the leaked draft opinion. Protesters went to Justices Brett Kavanaugh’s, Samuel Alito’s and John Roberts’ homes, too.
The draft opinion that sparked protests was published by Politico on May 2. It revealed that the Supreme Court intends to overturn Roe v. Wade, the 1973 decision that made abortion a constitutional right under particular circumstances. Alito wrote the majority opinion, saying that Roe v. Wade was wrong from the beginning.
“Roe was egregiously wrong from the start,” Alito wrote in the document, Politico reports. “Its reasoning was exceptionally weak, and the decision has had damaging consequences. And far from bringing about a national settlement of the abortion issue, Roe and Casey have enflamed debate and deepened division.”
“We hold that Roe and Casey must be overruled,” he wrote. “It is time to heed the Constitution and return the issue of abortion to the people’s elected representatives.”
Alito also noted that the “inescapable conclusion is that a right to abortion is not deeply rooted in the Nation’s history and traditions.”
Politico also revealed that the four other Republican-appointed justices, Clarence Thomas, Neil Gorsuch, Kavanaugh and Barrett, sided with Alito.
According to NBC News, SCOTUS is expected to announce its ruling in June or July.
