R. Kelly’s camp has released a statement in response to the Times Up movement’s support of #MuteRKelly.

According to Buzzfeed News, the statement applauds Times Up for its activism while expressing disappointment in its recent decision to explicitly endorse #MuteRKelly.

“R. Kelly supports the pro-women goals of the Time’s Up movement. We understand criticizing a famous artist is a good way to draw attention to those goals — and in this case, it is unjust and off-target,” the statement reads.

The statement goes on to scold Time’s Up for not speaking to “any of the women who welcome R. Kelly’s support” and said they “rushed to judgment without the facts.”

The statement paints the “Step In The Name Of Love” singer as the victim of a “greedy, conscious and malicious conspiracy to demean him, his family and the women with whom he spends his time.”

The statement ended with the singer’s rep copying Bill Cosby’s team by comparing #MuteRKelly to a modern-day lynching.

“R. Kelly’s music is a part of American and African-American culture that should never — and will never — be silenced,” the statement concludes. “Since America was born, black men and women have been lynched for having sex or for being accused of it.”

The statement arrived after Kelly posted a video on his Twitter page on Sunday night expressing his disappointment over a concert being cancelled because of "rumors."
