Former Illinois Republican congressman and current radio show host, Joe Walsh is expected to announce a primary challenge to President Donald Trump in 2020. Walsh has recently been critical of Trump, calling on members of the Republican party to stand against him and his extreme rhetoric.

In a Thursday interview on CNN's New Day, Walsh discussed his reasons for considering a campaign and gave himself a time table on when such a move would be announced.

"I'm strongly, strongly considering it. I've told you before — if somebody's going to get in there and go after him, John, it's got to be done soon," Walsh told CNN's John Berman. "You're running out of time. But more importantly, these are not conventional times. Look at the guy in the White House. These are urgent times."

Walsh, while complaining about Trump's outlandish statements putting the United States in an unprecedented situation, is not immune to such talking points himself.

Walsh endorsed and voted for Trump in 2016, but has said that the president lost his support after the 2018 summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Helsinki. At the gathering, President Trump appeared to accept President Putin's word that Russia did not interfere in the 2016 election, despite that going against much of the evidence brought forward by American intelligence at the time.

"Trump's a bully, and he's a coward, and the only way you beat a bully and you beat a coward is to expose them, is to punch them," he said. "He is a bad man. Virtually every time he opens his mouth, he lies."

Walsh is not the only Republican stepping up to give voters an alternative in the Republican party, former Massachusetts Governor Bill Weld has also announced a campaign for the Republican nomination. Weld also ran in 2016 as the Libertarian party's nominee for the White House.
