During a congressional hearing on proposed budget cuts on Monday, Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson mentioned a cut of around $6 billion to Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Rep. Al Green wasted no time digging right into Carson about the proposed cuts when he wanted the specifics and Carson was unable to deliver..

When Green asked about the specifics of cuts to public housing, Carson gave broad figures saying the cuts would be “in the neighborhood of $2 billion to $3 billion."

Green then explained to Carson that he was worried about his constituents, many of whom use housing vouchers. He wanted to be able to warn them if there were going to be affected by these cuts. However, Carson insisted that he didn’t “want to open the books and look at the numbers.”

Green then let Carson have it for a belief that he said those around Carson had that “the rich need more” and poor people “could do more with less.”

"Mr. Carson, if poor people could do more with less, there would be no more poor people," Green says. “Poor people are not poor because they choose to be poor."
