In Trump's America, anything is possible.

A father and son in Newport, Rhode Island, are going head-to-head over a state House seat in the upcoming election, reports The Associated Press

David Quiroa Sr., 47, and David Quiroa Jr., 22, are at opposite ends of the political spectrum. Quiroa Sr. is a staunch Trump supporter who ran for the same seat 14 years ago. And Quiroa Jr. is a Democrat who supported Hillary Clinton's bid for the presidency in 2016.

“It’ll be interesting for sure. What better way to argue with my father than on the political level?” Quiroa Jr. told The Associated Press. “He definitely is a very good motivator. Even if it’s to motivate to stop him.”

With their support of Trump, Quiroa Sr. and his wife, Iris, have driven a small wedge in their family. When he was a child, he lived in Guatemala before moving to New York.

With the constant criticism of the Trump's administration's immigration policy targeting mostly Hispanics, Quiroa Sr.'s support is glaring. However, the family has taken it in stride.

“Unfortunately, most of our country is divided right now,” he said. “We definitely had a lot of surprised faces. “Everyone was smiling and laughing and saying ‘Oh, that’s so funny.’ They were all flabbergasted.”

Quiroa Jr. was inspired to run because he believed young people could change the country for the better. His father's announcement was met with a declaration of his own.

“He thought I was kidding initially. He thought it was an empty threat. When he said he was going to go, I said I was going to go,” said Quiroa Jr.

The two went to city hall and filed the necessary paperwork to run for the seat currently held by Democrat Rep. Marvin Abney. This, of course, puts Mrs. Quiroa in a tough situation when it comes time to vote.

“I would say maybe my father, but at this point, since I’m in the mix, I don’t know,” Junior said. “She could surprise us all and vote for Abney.”

In the meantime, the two are on a quest to retrieve the 50 signatures needed to qualify.
