Rihanna set the record straight regarding her relationship with the NFL and reports she turned down the Super Bowl in support of Colin Kaepernick.
Last October, reports surfaced that the mogul refuted the NFL's request to perform at Super Bowl LIII as Blavity previously reported. In a recent interview with Vogue, the "What's My Name" singer confirmed she did indeed turn down the halftime gig in support of the former San Francisco 49ers player.
Kaepernick has made headlines for kneeling during the national anthem in protest of police brutality against Black people.
“I couldn’t dare do that. For what? Who gains from that? Not my people. I just couldn’t be a sellout. I couldn’t be an enabler. There’s things within that organization that I do not agree with at all, and I was not about to go and be of service to them in any way,” RiRi told Vogue.
This isn’t the first time the Barbadian has been outspoken about her political views. The proud immigrant often calls on her fans to “put all your heads together and put your voices together and be as loud as possible” in protecting immigrant rights.
She even designed a t-shirt that reads “Immigrant,” for her Fenty line.
The lingerie designer has tried to stop Trump from using her music during his rallies and has called him an “immoral pig.”
Although she isn’t a U.S. citizen, she still empathizes with those suffering, but also feels hopeful for a brighter future.
"I feel like the darkness has actually forced people to find this light within them where they want to do better,” she says. “It’s easy when you think everything is going really well and perfect. When everything is flowers and butterflies and you’re in your own bubble and your own world. But to see it, to know it’s happening—it pushes you to want to be the light in the world.”
