I've missed past screenings of this flick here in NYC (there has been at least 1 screening I'm aware of), and I keep hoping it'll return so that I can finally see it! It looks like I'll get another chance…

A film profiled earlier this year, when it made its debut at the 2011 installment of the Tribeca Film Festival here in New York City, is Rwandan filmmaker Kivu Ruhorahoza’s feature film debut, Grey Matter (aka Matière Grise), shot on location in Kigali, Rwanda.

The Global Film Initiative announced today 10 award-winning narrative feature films from around the world (Albania, Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Iran, Iraq, Morocco, Rwanda and Turkey) that will headline the Global Lens 2012 film series – the annual collaboration between MoMA and the Global Film Initiative, going into its 9th season, as part of the touring film exhibition project conceived to encourage filmmaking in countries with emerging film communities.

And Grey Matter was 1 of the 10 lucky films selected to be a part of this traveling initiative, which means many of you all over the world will get to see the film, as well as the other 9 that made the cut!

So congrats to Kivu on the honor. 

First stop is, of course, New York City, my backyard, where the series will run from January 12th through the 28th (practically the same period as the Sundance Film Festival).

The synopsis for Grey Matter reads:

When his grant falls through a few days before production, a young filmmaker hides the bad news from his team and continues preparations on his film The Cycle of the Cockroach without financing or equipment. Reality blurs as scenes from the script suddenly begin to materialize – can this film exist only in his dreams?

Maybe a touch of Fellini’s 8 1/2 in there perhaps, as films that center on filmmakers in some turmoil, as the dream world blurs with reality, are often compared to.

I hope it screens during the early hald of the exhibition series, as I might be at the Sundance Film Festival, which begins on the 19th of January, and runs through the 29th.
