Admired for her adamant fight for the rights and preservation of people of color, Senator Kamala D. Harris is no stranger to the podium or controversy. Over the weekend. Sen. Harris gave an empowering speech in commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the First Congregational Church in Atlanta, GA, the 2nd eldest congregational church in the country! Amidst the loving words, thank yous, and jokes into the congregation, she also touched on a poignant, current issue.

Senator Harris made her first public statement regarding the despicable comments of President Trump towards Colin Kaepernick and the other protesting members of the NFL. She stated, "Let’s speak the truth that when Americans demand recognition that their lives matter, or kneel to call attention to injustice, that that is an expression of free speech, protected by our Constitution, and they should not be threatened or bullied."

She discusses not only what needs to be done to be smart on crime but also understanding the concept of redemption, quoting scriptures such as Proverbs 31:9 and the book of Luke. She continues, "And finally, let’s speak truth, another truth. Although in our country today there are forces of hate and division trying to tear us apart, Americans have so much more in common than what separates us. And that is the truth. When we sing the Star-Spangled Banner, we rightly think about the brave men and women from all backgrounds who proudly defend the freedom of those they may never meet and people who will never know their names. When we sing the Star-Spangled Banner, we also think about those marching in the streets who demand that the ideals of that flag represent them too."

Continuing to touch on issues such as the suffering of immigrants in this country, hurricane relief for Puerto Rico, the violence on black people in this country, it is clear what side of the fight this sister is on; the side of righteousness and justice.
