Del. Stacey Plaskett (D-V.I.) confronted Rep. Glen Grothman (R-Wis.) Wednesday after he claimed Black Lives Matter has no interest in the “old-fashioned family" while giving a speech on the House floor.
“First, one of the things that hasn't been mentioned, the increase in the earned income tax credit for single people has a marriage penalty in it," the congressman said. "I bring it up because I know the strength that Black Lives Matter had in this last election. I know it's a group that doesn't like the old-fashioned family — disturbed that we have another program here in which we're increasing the marriage penalty."
In response, Plaskett took to the microphone and blasted Grothman for his flagrant dog whistles.
“How dare you say that we are not interested in families in the Black community?" the congresswoman rebutted. "That is outrageous, that should be stricken down.”
#BlackLivesMatter and I had to let my Colleague from Wisconsin know that in so many words today. #HowDareYou

The heated conversation took place while the House of Representatives deliberated the highly anticipated $1.9 trillion COVID-19 relief bill, which the Senate passed in a narrow Democratic victory on Saturday.
Grothman continued in his dissatisfaction with the package, adding that loan forgiveness contingent upon race is polarizing.
“Second thing, we have loan forgiveness on farms based on ethnicity," he went on. "OK. Some people are going to get forgiveness. Some people aren't. I think that's incredibly divisive. I think we started out with a divisive inaugural speech right off the bat. And to go down this route is only going to create divisiveness in America.”
Plaskett also acknowledged how the Black community has successfully flourished, despite constant setbacks while navigating oppression.
“We have been able to keep our families alive for over 400 years, and the assault on our families to not have Black lives or not even have Black families," the congresswoman said.
In an appearance on The Reid Out with MSNBC anchor Joy Reid, Plaskett mentioned that Grothman’s behavior is a part of the congressman's modus operandi.
“If you just look up Glenn Grothman, he has a history of making remarks about ‘welfare mommas,’ just very racist remarks throughout his time, ”she said.
This also isn’t the first time Grothman has been considered problematic.
During a 2013 conversation with Christian Youth America, Grothman claimed that Planned Parenthood is “the most racist organization” in the nation and has a tradition of “not liking people who are not white.”
Grothman has yet to respond to Plaskett’s dismissal which yielded applause from House members.
