A former Subway restaurant manager in Birmingham, Alabama, seemingly defends her choice to say  “n****r” during an altercation with a disgruntled man.

According to local news outlet WBRC, Antuan Clark came to the Subway restaurant to check on his sister during her first day on the job. The manager, April Epperson, told Clark he was not allowed in the store while she was in the process of training.

"She's in training, and while she's here, she doesn't need a distraction. I'm going to need them to get away from the property or step off the property while she's at work,” Epperson told WBRC, describing her side of the altercation.

Clark and Epperson got into a heated disagreement when Clark assumed she fired his sister on the spot. However, she claims she didn't. Words were exchanged, and things turned violent. In the two-minute video, the woman can be heard using the N-word. The Root reports the woman saying "f***ing n****r."

"He punched me in my face. I pushed him out the door because that was the only thing I knew to do. I felt like I was in danger. I pushed him out the door. He punches me in my face, and as soon as I shut the door, the only thing that came out of my mouth was, 'N*****,' and I'm sorry. It could have been a Mexican standing there. It popped out of my mouth that's what that Mexican would have got called. That white person would have got called that, too," Epperson said.

Although she was caught using the word, Epperson claims she doesn't use the word often and has refuted accusations of racism because she has black family members.

"I said the wrong word. I'm sorry for it. I am taking my punishment, and I'm walking away from it. I get that I screwed up. I'm a big girl. I can handle it. But I can't handle being called racist on national television over a slip-up,” Epperson said.

Subway has since distanced themselves from her and the incident. She was fired almost instantly.
