After three and a half years in jail while awaiting trial for the murder of a security guard, Suge Knight has been sentenced to 28 years in prison.

On Tuesday, TMZ reported the co-founder of Death Row Records pleaded ‘no contest’ to voluntary manslaughter charges.

The charges derived from an incident between Knight and Terry Carter in January 2015 on the set of Straight Outta Compton, CNN reports. In a video of the hit-and-run, Knight can be seen driving up to a restaurant near the movie’s set before Cle “Bone” Sloan, a security guard, approached. After spending a few moments talking, the car suddenly jerks backward, sending Sloan to the ground, and Knight urges the car forward and over Sloan’s body. Carter was also run over during the deadly exchange. 

According to the BBC, and in accordance with California law, a no contest plea holds the same weight as a guilty plea. 

“I’m surprised he pleaded out,” Carter’s daughter, Crystal, said outside of court, The Associated Press reports. “Normally he likes the cameras to be on him 24/7.”

According to CNN, Knight claims he acted in self-defense, protecting himself from Sloan, who he said was carrying a gun. 

While California usually dictates 11 years for voluntary manslaughter charges, People Magazine reports the 53-year-old will be serving 22 years in prison for the act and an additional five due to this being Knight’s third strike in court. The first strike came in 1992 when Knight was charged with two counts of assault with a deadly weapon, and the second was from 1997 when Knight violated his probation.

The years Knight spent awaiting trial will be docked from his overall sentencing. He'll also serve three years of parole. Knight’s official sentencing is set for October, the BBC reports.
