After more than a century of sons, a Montgomery County, Texas, firefighter’s family is celebrating the arrival of a baby girl. The newborn ends a 108-year streak of boys born into the family.

The last time a baby girl was born into the Sherman family was over a century ago. On Sunday, Michael Sherman and his wife, Joacquia Sherman, gathered with family and friends to reveal the good news.

“I just feel honored,” Michael told ABC 13. “We are the ones bringing the baby girl into the world. Finally, after over a hundred years. It’s amazing.”

Orah Belle Sherman, Michael’s great-great-aunt, born in 1917, was the last girl to share the family’s last name.

‘She was a trailblazer in Atlanta’

He spoke highly of his aunt and described her as an influential figure from the South.

“She was a trailblazer in Atlanta,” Michael said. “She dealt with the civil rights during the civil rights time. She met a lot of civil rights leaders, and she made an impact in Atlanta.”

Family members are already anticipating the arrival of the baby girl, wondering what she will be like and how she will compare to her great-great-great-aunt.

Could breaking a century-long tradition be a Guinness World Record?

“I love her. No matter what path she chooses, we will be with her,” Michael’s grandmother, Lydia Robertson, said. “She’s going to always have support here.”

The family expects the baby girl to be born in March. Could her arrival set a Guinness World Record? They said they would check with the global authority on all things record-breaking to see.
