Almost a year following a successful GoFundMe campaign to help a homeless man, the man at the center is still waiting to receive the $300,000 to get his life back on track, according to WRCB-TV.

Veteran Johnny Bobbitt gave his last $20 to a stranded woman on October 2017. The woman, Kate McClure, ran out of gas near a Philadelphia interstate, and Bobbitt stepped in to save the day, reports Gizmodo.

His kindness was rewarded with McClure launching a GoFundMe campaign to raise $10,000 — money intended to get him a new vehicle and pay for rent. The campaign spread like wildfire, and scores of donors gave $402,706 to her cause.

However, the money's current whereabouts are unclear. An investigative report from the Philadelphia Inquirer claims the funds were used in ways that conflicted with the promises made in the GoFundMe campaign update. McClure and her partner, Mark D’Amico, are accused of misappropriating the funds.

In the update, McClure said the money would go to a pick-up truck; instead, the couple bought a used SUV; two trusts were created in his name; a bank account for everyday spending was created, and funds were set aside for donations to organizations that helped him over the years.

The Inquirer's report states the couple gave him a camper located on D'Amico's property and put the SUV and camper in the couple's name. Both items have been sold by the couple.

Lawyers representing Bobbitt have claimed the two have mismanaged the funds and have reached out to GoFundMe to investigate the matter further.

“GoFundMe is looking into the claims of misuse regarding this campaign,” GoFundMe spokesperson Bartlett Jackson told Gizmodo. “We will work to ensure that Johnny receives the help he deserves and that the donors' intentions are honored.”

The couple has pushed back against claims of wrongdoing. While speaking with the Inquirer, they have said Bobbitt received more than half of the donations, but they are withholding $200,000 for fear he would misuse funds.

“Giving him all that money, it’s never going to happen. I’ll burn it in front of him,” D’Amico told The Inquirer.

He added that giving Bobbitt, who has a history of drug addiction, those funds is like “giving him a loaded gun.”

The couple did not provide official financial statements backing their claims. McClure is also concerned she could lose her job over the accusations levied against her and her partner.
