In the wake of Lifetime's Surviving R. Kelly, a chilling docu-series about R&B singer R. Kelly's alleged sexual misconduct, there has been an onslaught of protests calling for a ban on the artist's music. On Wednesday, protesters gathered outside of Kelly's recording label to demand its executives finally end their relationship with the singer.

According to New York Magazine, the Rally to Protect Black Girls demonstration was held Wednesday morning outside of Sony/RCA Records in New York City. According to the event's official Facebook invite, the demonstrators wanted to "demand RCA and Sony stand up to protect Black girls by muting R. Kelly once and for all."

Members of #MuteRKelly, Black Women's Blueprint, Care2, Color of Change, CREDO, Girls for Gender Equity, NOW-NYC and UltraViolet all joined forces to host the rally.

Protesters arrived at RCA with a document demanding the immediate dissolution of Kelly's contract; the petition reportedly contained over 217,000 signatures from various members of the anti-Kelly coalition groups. During the demonstration, protesters chanted, "Drop R. Kelly":

Jade Magnus Ogunnaike, an official with nonprofit group Color of Change, delivered remarks blasting Sony Music for enabling the Chicago native to continue preying on young women, most notably Aaliyah.

"They knew he illegally married an underage Aaliyah," Ogunnaike asserted. "They knew he was grooming young Black girls as young as 13, 14 and 15 and keeping them in his studio. They knew. And they were okay with it."

As Blavity previously reported, Kelly and Aaliyah were married from August 31, 1994, to February 7, 1995, and there have been claims that during their relationship he was physically abusive toward the late singer.

Efforts to bring the allegations of Kelly's accusers before a judge have picked up. As Blavity also reported, the Chocolate Factory singer is now under criminal investigation in Fulton County, Georgia. As of January 8, the district attorney is curating information about a series of events that occurred at Kelly's Georgia mansion.
