Ever since Colin Kaepernick took a knee in August 2016 to protest police brutality, he's been ostracized by the bigwigs at the NFL and out of work.

But, his sacrifice hasn't been ignored; Kaepernick has garnered support all around the world. Everyone from the football fanatic to public figures such as rapper Common and activist and esteemed college professor Angela Davis have publicized their support of Kaepernick as reported by Business Insider.

Apparently, Jennifer Lopez and Shakira missed the memo. In September, the two Latino pop stars agreed to perform on the Super Bowl LIV main stage during the halftime show. It is scheduled to air on February 2, 2020.

News of their performance was a delight to some while others took offense given the Black community's general regard toward the NFL in light of Kaepernick's blackballing. Shakira backed her decision according to a November report by The Guardian.

"Well, you know, I think it’s the right thing to do for the Latino community because we’ve also been through so much in Trump’s America, with walls being built and…" she said while trailing off.

"It’s an opportunity to celebrate our culture, you know?" she went on to say.

Shakira acknowledges how difficult it was for her to cross over into the American-pop scene, but ironically she doesn't see a problem with performing for an organization that continues to disenfranchise Black players. She iterated, "I had to fight my own record company to put out music like 'Hips Don't Lie.' My music always had some kind of fusion – Colombian and Middle Eastern influences, so it made my path even harder.”

According to BET, J.Lo released a statement to the press stating, "Ever since I saw Diana Ross fly off into the sky at the Halftime Show, I dreamed of performing at the Super Bowl. And now it's made even more special not only because it's the NFL's 100th anniversary, but also because I am performing with a fellow Latina. I can't wait to show what us girls can do on the world's biggest stage."

This isn't the first instance J.Lo has faced backlash from the Black community.

She agreed to perform the tribute to the very Black Motown group for the 2019 Grammys.

"It was for my mom," she told Entertainment News. She continued, "The thing about music is that it inspires all," she said. "Any type of music can inspire any type of artist. You can’t tell people what to love. You can’t tell people what they can and can’t do, what they should sing or not sing. You gotta do what’s in your heart."
