Major banks and financial institutions will close for 24 hours this month.

According to Fox 5 DC, Wells Fargo, Bank of America and Chase are among the financial institutions that will face a 24-hour shutdown on Oct. 13.

Why are banks closed on Oct. 13?

The closures are due to Columbus Day, which falls on the second Monday of October each year, according to Fox 5 DC.

The day also observes Indigenous Peoples’ Day, another popular holiday that is celebrated in various parts of the nation.

Customers with in-person banking needs should visit their local branch of any of these banks before or after Oct. 13.

Government employees will have the day off for Columbus Day

The U.S. Office of Personnel Management lists Columbus Day as one of 11 federal holidays for government employees, as federal offices are closed.

“Most Federal employees are entitled to paid holiday time off when excused from duty on a designated holiday,” according to the website.

“Designated holidays include official Federal holidays (5 U.S.C. 6103(a)) or “in lieu of” holidays, as applicable; Presidential Inauguration Day, where applicable (specific to the Washington, DC, area); and Federal holidays declared by Executive order, which are treated as holidays for pay and leave purposes. Most Federal employees are entitled to holiday premium pay when they are required to work during designated holiday hours.”

Is USPS open on Columbus Day?

According to Cincinnati.com, mail is not delivered on federal holidays, so customers will not receive letter mail and packages on this day.

USPS Priority Mail is the only service that will operate on a regular schedule.
