At least 84 people were killed at a Bastille Day fireworks celebration on Thursday night when a man driving a large truck plowed through a crowd of festival goers.

Two of the victims were American.

More than 50 others were injured.

The driver, who was subsequently shot to death by law enforcement officers, was reportedly already on the police radar for a history of armed attacks. Christian Estrosi, president of the Nice region, told French media that “the truck was loaded with arms, loaded with grenades.”

French President François Hollande addressed the country in the wake of the attack, saying, “After Paris in January 2015, and then November last year with St.Denis and now Nice is also touched, it is all of France that is under the threat of Islamist terrorism.”

In a statement released by the White House, President Obama condemned the attack and pledged America’s support to France saying, “On behalf of the American people, I condemn in the strongest terms what appears to be a horrific terrorist attack in Nice, France, which killed and wounded dozens of innocent citizens. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and other loved ones of those killed, and we wish a full recovery for the many wounded.”

Democratic Presidential nominee, Hillary Clinton released a statement on Twitter pledging solidarity with the people of France.

Republican Presidential nominee, Donald Trump surmised his thoughts on the attack this way before sending condolences in a subsequent tweet.

This attack came on France’s national holiday symbolizing freedom and independence. A state of emergency has extended by three months, which was set to end on July 26th stemming from recent attacks.

“France is strong. France will always be stronger than the fanatics who want to strike France today,” Hollande said.
