A Philadelphia teen is being recognized for his bravery after risking his life to save his 1-year-old nephew during a house fire.

ABC News reported 17-year-old Brent Rudy Edwards is one of 16 Americans and two Canadians honored with the prestigious award. The Carnegie Hero Fund Commission announced its recipients on Thursday where winners will also receive a grant endowed by the late industrialist and philanthropist Andrew Carnegie.

The organization released a statement on its website about Edwards explaining how on May 27, 2017, the Overbrook resident's mother realized his younger nephew was still inside after they had escaped the house fire.

"Hearing the toddler cough, Brent crawled inside the house 12 feet to him, clutched him to his chest and ran toward the light at the front door. Once outside, he handed Bryce to his mother and collapsed, losing consciousness," the statement read.

"Arriving paramedics revived him, and he and Bryce were taken to the hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation. They recovered. Bryce was not burned," it concluded.

The Overbrook High School student told ABC 6 Action News he was very excited when he learned about the award. According to the news outlet, an anonymous reader nominated Edwards.

"I didn't know what it was at first, and then I started reading it, and then I got excited," Edwards said. "Like wow, I'm really getting recognized as a hero."
