The ongoing investigation into the fatal shooting of Stephon Clark by Sacramento police officers now includes the state of California itself. Sacramento Police Chief Daniel Hahn announced at a press conference on Tuesday that the California Department of Justice will be joining the city department's probe and that state attorney general Xavier Becerra will be leading an "independent part" of the investigation, ABC News reports.

Mayor Darrell Steinberg, Sacramento County District Attorney Anne Marie Schubert, community leaders and pastors were also present at the conference.

“The police department will continue to be transparent and continue to openly share information that we can regarding this investigation,” said Hahn. Hahn also noted that the names of the police officers involved in the shooting have not been released due to the death threats they have received.

Becerra confirmed that the investigation will be “based on the facts and the law; nothing more, nothing less,” according to New York Daily News.

Attorney Benjamin Crump recently held a press conference demanding justice for the slain 22-year-old, who was found to be unarmed. Crump had noted that Clark "was not shot once. But a young black man holding a cellphone is shot 20 times. Young man who was bombing homes in Austin … He wasn't shot once. But an unarmed black man holding a cellphone is shot 20 times."

“Our city is at a critical point right now and I believe this will help build faith and confidence,” noted Hahn.
