One of three people who were injured in a Florida drive-by shooting says she was sent home from the hospital with a bullet still in her head.

Miami-Dade County resident Clive Khouri found his car surrounded by gun-wielding men on all-terrain vehicles shortly after kissing another man in his car, reports Local 10 News. Khouri tried to flee but was chased by the men on ATVs. The shooting happened around 7:30 p.m. near Southwest 191st Lane on February 11.

He believes he was the victim of an anti-gay hate crime.

“When I tried to speed off to come around this corner, they kept trying to shoot, shoot, shoot,” said Khouri. “Some of the guys probably saw us kissing in the car.”

Shakena Jefferson, who is married to a woman, was also injured in the senseless act while trying to get in another vehicle with her wife. A bullet grazed both Jefferson's and Khouri's heads. Khouri's friend, an unidentified male, was struck directly and was transported to Jackson South Trauma Center in critical condition.

Though Jefferson, 42, has returned home, her wife said she was still struggling with the pain and trauma associated with the shooting.

According to ABC News, Jefferson said doctors never even performed an X-ray on her, thus sending her home with the bullet still in her head. The shocking casualty with which she was treated isn't a far cry from a frightening trend of Black women not being taken seriously by medical institutions.

Jefferson eventually went to another hospital where she did undergo an X-ray where the bullet was discovered. She had to have emergency surgery to have it removed, reports ABC News.

“My wife got shot in the head. Two bullets went straight off her head, and I was standing here by my daughter’s car,” Jefferson’s partner of 20 years, Janet Medley, said according to The Advocate.

"She's afraid, she feels like the bullet is still in her head," continued Medley. "She's been through too much."

Medley also suffers from fear, having witnessed the shooting. “The bullets were just flying across my ear. I can just hear them ringing in my ears,” Medley said. "I can't even protect my own family in my own home."

Through tears, Khouri revealed to Local 10 that his friend is still in serious condition.

Police have not made any arrests, but detectives urge anyone with information to come forward.

"We don't have too much information as to who these individuals may be but obviously we're asking the community that if anybody may have heard or seen anything, regardless of how minor it may be, contact Crime Stoppers or investigators," Miami-Dade Police Det. Alvaro Zabaleta said, according to NBC Miami.
