After two miscarriages and an experience with IVF, Jackman and Furness made the decision to adopt. However, the couple adamantly states they always wanted to pursue adoption in a 2012 interview with ABC's Katie.

"To be clear, Deb and I always wanted to adopt. So that was always in our plan," the Tony Award-winning actor said. "We didn't know where in the process that would happen but biologically obviously we tried and it was not happening for us and it is a difficult time. We did IVF and Deb had a couple of miscarriages. I'll never forget it, the miscarriage thing — it happens to one in three pregnancies, but it's very, very rarely talked about."

Though not biologically his, Jackman certainly does not think of Oscar and Ava as "adopted," per se.

The 52-year-old explained to Australia's Herald Sun in 2011:

"From the moment we started the adoption process, all the anxiety went away. I don’t think of them as adopted – they’re our children. Deb and I are believers in I suppose you could call it destiny. We feel things happened the way they are meant to. Obviously, biologically wasn’t the way we were meant to have children.

"I think any parent can relate – trying to have children is wonderful and when you feel as though that’s not going to happen, there’s a certain anxiety that goes with it. We thought we’d have a kid or two biologically and then adopt. But when we decided we’d had enough of IVF, we went ahead with adoption.”
