During a protest outside of wealthy Democratic donor Ed Buck's home, protesters clashed with a local reporter who claimed their actions made people racists.

Protesters demonstrated on January 7 following the death of a second gay Black man at Buck's home. The victim identified as 55-year-old Timothy Dean was found unresponsive due to an alleged drug overdose. Friends and family told media members their loved one did not have a history of drug abuse.

Nearly 18 months ago, the first man found dead was 26-year-old Gemmel Moore. Blavity reported he died of a suspected overdose in July 2017. Buck was never charged for Moore's death.

Community activist Jasmyne Cannick, who was one of the primary activists involved in the protest, spoke to The Root about the heated confrontation with KTLA reporter Kacey Montoya. In the video posted above, viewers can see protesters and Montoya exchanging a few words amid chants.

Cannick said Montoya reportedly engaged with demonstrators because their views conflicted with hers. In some ways, it seemed Montoya made herself a part of the story.

“Kacey Montoya started arguing with a lot of the people outside. The attention shifted to her and she just wouldn’t let it go,” Cannick said. “There was a lot of back and forth between her and the people in the crowd.”

Things escalated when one protester told the reporter it was people like her enabling and seemingly abetting his crimes against gay Black men.

“People like me?" she asked. "That’s why people are racist.”

Like other protesters who took part in the demonstration, Cannick believes neighbors and a slew of others are complicit in Buck's crimes.

“We are all clear that as Black people, if we had one person dead from a drug overdose in our home, we would be in trouble," Cannick told The Root. "Here is a white man who has now two dead bodies in his home because of drug overdoses, and he is still a free man."

Moore and Dean are not the only victims, it appears. A third man, 28-year-old Jermaine Gagnon, told The Daily Mail he had three encounters with the 63-year-old in 2018.

Gagnon alleged he was injected with meth after smoking the drug with Buck in one of the encounters. Fortunately, he managed to escape Buck's West Hollywood home to tell his story.
