There’s a popular saying that goes, “If you want something done right, you’ve got to do it yourself.”

Apparently, that was the mantra endorsed by Bree Newsome when, around 5:30AM Saturday morning, she decided to climb to the top of the flagpole flying the Confederate flag in front of the South Carolina state capitol, and brought it down as the police waited to arrest her. As she unhooked the flag she shouted out in a stern, unwavering voice “You come against me with hatred, and oppression, and violence. I come against you in the name of God. This flag comes down today.”

The confederate flag has been under heavy scrutiny has the nation continues to grapple with the mass shooting of nine Black members of the historic Emanuel AME Church is Charleston, S.C. That sentiment was amplified yesterday by President Obama while giving the Eulogy for slain Congressman, Rev. Clementa Pinckney. During the Eulogy President Obama stated, “Removing the flag from this state’s capital would not be an act of political correctness, ……It would not an insult to the valor of Confederate soldiers. It would simply be acknowledgment that the cause for which they fought, the cause of slavery, was wrong.”

Newsome and James Tyson, will allegedly be charged with defacing a monument, which is a violation of state law 10-11-315. They face three years in jail and a $5,000 fine.
