The 11 children of Sadie Williams are suing a Long Island funeral home after they said someone else was placed in their mother's burial plot, CBS New York reports.

The family is seeking $88 million in gross negligence after what was supposed to be a 72-hour burial for a Muslim tradition ended up lasting 22 days. The siblings said prior to their mother's passing, they made arrangements with the funeral home so she could be buried according to religious traditions, ABC 7 reports.

The siblings said they told the funeral director at Slinger-Hasgill Funeral Home in Amityville that the body they were shown was not their mother, pointing out a missing mole and her fingernails.

“I said, ‘Those aren’t my mother’s nails. Her burn mark is not on her arm,'” daughter Salimah Lee said.

"I stood at the top of the steps with Joe Slinger and said that's not my mother, he said, 'Of course it is,'" Lee said. "I got to the coffin, first thing I noticed, that's not my mother and she was wearing a child's watch."

The wrong person's body was eventually buried beside Williams' husband after the funeral service, according to ABC 7.

“I said, ‘Mom has a mole.’ I just kept picking out different things. He stood at the top of the steps of the funeral home, laughing, going, ‘Oh, I hear that all the time. They tell me. People say that all the time. The embalming fluid smooths them out,'” Lee added.

Just three days after Williams' funeral service, the director called telling them "I just want you to know that wasn't your mom."

Lee said she rushed to the funeral home where she finally was able to see the 87-year-old's body.

“Every single time I think about it, all I can see is my mother on that cold slab, naked … and he showed no concern when he opened that door and I saw her, just stark naked on the table, just sitting there, like she was waiting for me to find her,” Lee said.

Another service and burial was held for Williams on Sept. 8.

Back in 2020, Blavity previously reported that two Black teens' bodies were mixed up at separate funeral homes. One of the young woman's organs was also allegedly harvested without approval.
