1. Have you relaxed your hair or are you currently transitioning from relaxed hair?

Either way, the first step is deciding how you want your journey to begin. If you’re absolutely set on displaying your natural hair texture ASAP, consider a “big chop.” A big chop is known in the natural hair community as an extensive hair cut, where all of the chemically-processed hair is removed, regardless of the amount of natural hair you have left. Many people are left with what’s considered a “TWA (Teenie Weenie Afro).”

2. So you’ve decided to transition instead of making the big chop and now you have two different hair types at once.

Say no more, I know the struggle is real.

Contrary to popular belief, a big chop is not the only answer. There are several different ways to manipulate both textures so that they appear to be the same.

3. How do you blend your two hair types?

Roller sets are your friend! By setting the hair once a week, this will encourage the manipulation of your two curl patterns, forcing them to appear as one. Protective styles such as twist outs, braid outs and updos hiding the ends of your hair are also great ways to camouflage the two hair textures.

4. Condition, Condition, Condition!

Your hair is ultra sensitive when in it’s natural state, and loves nothing more than a heaping slather of conditioner. Keeping your hair well-moisturized will prevent damage and promote length retention. Cleansing only once a week, if possible, will allow your tresses to blossom in their natural state, and will also promote the use of natural nutrients that are already found in your hair.

5. Reach out and touch a sista!

The great thing about the natural community is that there are some ladies who have been in the game for a minute (ex: 1+ years natural) including myself, who would be happy to answer any of your questions.
