Shortly after North Carolina’s Governor Pat McCrory announced the state would be filing a suit against the Department of Justice, Attorney General Loretta Lynch announced a countersuit.

While giving her remarks, Lynch compared the law to the historical and suppressive Jim Crow laws. Her reasoning behind the comparison lies behind the DOJ’s belief that the law is highly discriminatory and violates the standards set in the Civil Rights Act and the Violence Against Women Act.

“You have been told that this law protects vulnerable populations from harm. That is just not the case. What this law does is inflict further indignity for a population that has already suffered far more than its far share. This law provides no benefit to society, and all it does is harm innocent Americans,” Lynch said.

Although Lynch spoke on behalf of the entire department, her impassioned rhetoric and stern tone showed a different side of the Attorney General; however, she is not the only individual fired up over this law set in place by North Carolina. The debates surrounding this HB2 on all sides of the spectrum have been heated and are showing no signs of slowing down anytime soon. Major companies such as PayPal and film productions have pulled from North Carolina, which means a loss of job expansion. CitiBank, Facebook, Twitter, and even the NBA are demanding the law be repealed and this is just a short list.

The loss of revenue from these businesses can be detrimental to the state so there are two battles taking place here: upholding rights of citizens and keeping North Carolina’s economy afloat. There is a lot at risk here and neither side is backing down.
